Andy Biggs talks Trump, immigration and Arizona governor run
This week on The Gaggle, Congressman Andy Biggs talks with us about taxes, immigration and why he believes he's the right choice for Arizona's future.
Biggs stated he is running for Arizona governor because he believes Congress is broken and he dislikes the direction of the current state administration.
One of the major races that Arizonans will decide this midterm is for governor. On the Democratic side, current Gov. Katie Hobbs is running uncontested. But two major players are running against each other to represent the Republican party.
Congressman David Schweikert and Congressman Andy Biggs are both leaving their spots after years — decades in Schewikert's case — for a chance to lead Arizona. But primary voters will decide in July who makes it to the November ballot.
Biggs cut an imposing figure as president of the Arizona state Senate 10 years ago. After heading to Congress, he headed the House Freedom Caucus, setting the tone and agenda for the group that was arguably President Donald Trump's most loyal faction.
He's ready to return to Arizona full time after seeing that, in his mind, Congress is broken.
"It's not working like it's supposed to," he told The Gaggle this week. "I do believe that there's a tipping point in Arizona politics. ... I'm not liking the direction I'm seeing from the current governor, with some of her decisions on vetos, etc. and I just thought I should probably try to come home and see what I can do."
This week on The Gaggle, a politics podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Ron Hansen and Stephanie Murray are joined by Congressman Andy Biggs. He talks with us about taxes, immigration and why he believes he's the right choice for Arizona's future.
