Scott Knoebel honored for volunteer work as part of new Parks and Rec ...
Parks, Recreation and Forestry presented its first ever “Step Up Award” during the Austin City Council Meeting Monday night.
Parks and Rec Director Jason Sehon presented the award to Scott Knoebel in recognition of his service and contribution to the community, specifically for his time spent working and preparing the baseball complex at Riverland Community College.
“What a good example of who to give this award to,” Sehon said. “He’s part of a strong group of volunteers that helps maintain the fields at Riverland.”
Knoebel, as with subsequent picks going forward, was nominated and picked by the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Board. The award itself is meant to honor local individuals, businesses and organizations who make meaningful contributions to the community.
“We certainly appreciate you and the team and all of the volunteers who give of their time and talent,” said Mayor Steve King during the presentation.
Knoebel said that volunteering is an important part of a community, citing and paraphrasing the words of President John F. Kennedy.
“I really appreciate the award,” Knoebel said. “Don’t ask what the city can do for you, but what you can do for the city. That’s how I look at it.”
Going forward the award will be presented at City Council meetings on a quarterly basis during the first meeting of the month in January, April, July and October.
