The death of an 18-year-old woman whose body was found in a home owned by U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s husband has been ruled a homicide, Boston police announced Thursday.

The police department identified the woman as Boston resident Yoseliani Ann Marte Ocasio.

Police found Marte Ocasio’s body on July 18 after responding to a Mattapan home for a report of a person shot, according to a police report. Officers searched the Malta Street apartment around 1:50 p.m. and found her body in the rear bedroom of the unit. Boston Emergency Services responded to the scene and declared her dead around 2 p.m.

On July 19, an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Marte Ocasio died of a single gunshot wound, according to the report. Her manner of death was initially left undetermined pending further investigation.

Marte Ocasio’s mother, Elenie Ocasio, said in a GoFundMe campaign for her daughter’s funeral expenses that Marte Ocasio died “as a result of domestic violence.”

“No words can truly express the pain of losing someone so young, with so many dreams, hopes, and milestones still ahead of her,” Ocasio wrote. “Yoseliani was deeply loved by her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched. Her kindness, beautiful spirit, and bright future will never be forgotten.”

No arrests have been announced in connection with Marte Ocasio’s death.

Pressley, who has never lived in the Malta Street rental property, said she was devastated to learn of Marte Ocasio’s death.

“As the parent of a teenager, the thought of a young person violently losing their life in this way is beyond crushing,” the Boston legislator said in a statement.

“There is absolutely nothing that indicates any connection to the owners of the property,” Mariellen Burns, chief of communications for Boston police, told the Boston Herald regarding the incident.

No further information about Marte Ocasio’s death was immediately available.
