Mother of teen found dead at Boston home says her daughter was a domestic violence victim

A person who was found dead in a home owned by U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s husband Saturday afternoon has been identified by her mother and Pressley’s office as 18-year-old Yoseliani Marte.

Boston police responded to a report of a person shot at 25 Malta St. Unit 2 in Mattapan shortly after 1:50 p.m., according to a redacted police report. Officers searched the apartment and found the victim in the rear bedroom of the unit.

Boston Emergency Services responded to the scene and declared the victim dead around 2 p.m., according to the report. On Sunday, an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the victim died of a single gunshot wound.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the victim’s manner of death had not been determined, according to Boston police. Homicide detectives are investigating the death.

Marte’s mother, Elenie Ocasio, said in a GoFundMe campaign collecting money for her daughter’s funeral expenses that Marte died “as a result of domestic violence.”

“No words can truly express the pain of losing someone so young, with so many dreams, hopes, and milestones still ahead of her,” Ocasio wrote. “Yoseliani was deeply loved by her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched. Her kindness, beautiful spirit, and bright future will never be forgotten.”

Pressley, who has never lived in the Malta Street home, said she was devastated to learn of Marte’s death.

“As the parent of a teenager, the thought of a young person violently losing their life in this way is beyond crushing,” the Boston legislator said in a statement.

No further information about Marte’s death was immediately available.
