Will an endorsement from President Donald Trump and congressional experience make the difference in a tight Republican U.S. Senate race?

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, believes it will.

“We’ve got the president’s endorsement, he’s polling about 85% (in Alabama),” Moore told AL.com after speaking at the Republican Women of Huntsville’s Monthly Lunch on Tuesday. “I think an important point is the fact that we’ve got a record, we’ve got a conservative record and the president’s endorsement saying he can trust me.”

Recent polling shows Moore locked in a tight battle with Attorney General Steve Marshall and Jared Hudson, a former Navy SEAL and former GOP candidate for Jefferson County sheriff, heading into the May 19 party primary.

Moore told people attending the lunch that the president “knows that I had his back,” and brought up his early endorsement of Trump’s campaign for president in 2016, dating back to Trump’s appearance at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile that helped jump start his campaign.

Moore also touted his conservative rating in Congress, which he said was higher than the man he hopes to replace, U.S. Senator and current gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville.

“We have been in the fight,” the congressman said. “Our D.C. office has been rated the No. 1 work environment in all of Washington, D.C., out of all of the Republican offices. We’re no. 2 in the entire nation out of all the Republican offices in accessibility and transparency. We solved 8,000 cases in five years, for veterans and small business owners. You can be effective.”

Moore pointed out he was the only person in the race who had a legislative voting record.

“I have literally taken ideas through committee to the floor of the house, through the U.S. Senate and signed into law,” he said. Moore said one of his bills for veterans was signed into law by then-President Joe Biden.

“I tell everybody I don’t know if Joe Biden signed it or the autopen signed it, but we got credit,” Moore said. He emphasized relationships on Capitol Hill as important, citing endorsements by Vice President J.D. Vance, Turning Point USA and the Susan B. Anthony pro-life organization in addition to Trump’s.

“Every individual running in the Republican primary is going to tell you they are conservative,” he said. “I’m the only one with a record. They’re going to tell you ‘we’re Trump conservatives.’ The president knows I was the first in the nation to endorse him. He endorsed me in January.”

Moore touched on his Christian faith during the lunch. He said he felt led to run for the Senate, calling it an amazing experience.

When it came to important issues in north Alabama, Moore told AL.comthat infrastructure was at the top of the list.
