GOP Senate candidates Barry Moore and Jared Hudson trade barbs on key parts of Trump agenda
Two Republican candidates battling for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat are trading jabs about the best way to move key aspects of President Donald Trump’s agenda forward.
Rep. Barry Moore and Jared Hudson align on many positions. But as a June 16 runoff election draws closer, both men are critiquing positions on the filibuster and commitment to the SAVE America Act, which would tighten rules for American elections and voting.
“My opponent won’t commit to nuking the filibuster,” Moore posted on X June 3.
The filibuster is a Senate procedural rule that can block action and require Republicans and Democrats to work together.
“The president wants us to remove the filibuster, as does Senator Tuberville, and I agree with that,” Moore told a WVTM reporter. He said it was a necessary change in order to get the SAVE America Act and the rest of Trump’s agenda across the finish line.
Hudson said if Moore was serious about passing the SAVE Act, there were other actions he could take.
“Barry, if you’re serious about the SAVE America Act, start by calling Senator John Thune, who endorsed you, and tell him to stand with President Trump on it,” Hudson posted on X.
Hudson suggested keeping the traditional talking filibuster but removing the silent filibuster, which allows senators to quickly block legislation without debate.
“Alabama voters deserve a leader who can actually get the job done, not just talk about it. The SAVE America Act must be passed by nuking the silent filibuster,” he said in a video posted to X.
“We don’t need to change any Senate rules, like nuking the filibuster, to pass the SAVE America Act,” he said. “Nuke the filibuster and I guarantee Democrats will give D.C. statehood and pack the Supreme Court when they get power back.”
Hudson and Moore are expected to appear at a debate in Montgomery Monday evening, along with other Republican candidates who will appear in a runoff election.
The runoff is June 16.
