Longtime US Rep. Bennie Thompson defeats young Democratic challenger in Mississippi primary

Longtime U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson has won the Democratic nomination for Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District. The civil rights leader defeated two challengers, including Evan Turnage, a young antitrust lawyer who formerly served as counsel to then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Thompson has held his seat for more than three decades and is one of several long-serving congressional representatives who have faced opposition from young members of their party. Thompson’s primary victory sets him up to win his 18th congressional term in a district considered a Democratic stronghold in an otherwise Republican-led state.
