Rep. Van Duyne to Newsmax: Paxton Has Strong Edge Over Talarico

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Wednesday that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has a strong chance of defeating Democrat James Talarico in November after knocking out Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in Tuesday's Republican U.S. Senate primary runoff.

"I think Paxton's got a great chance of winning," Van Duyne said on Newsmax's "Bianca Across the Nation."

She said Talarico's positions on cultural issues, gender ideology, and immigration are far outside the political mainstream in the Lone Star State and will hurt Democrats in the general election.

"This is Texas. We don't stand for candidates that are vegans, that talk about expanding language to include animals as part of our Constitution," Van Duyne said.

She added that Talarico "talks about God being binary, talks about there being at least six sexes and wanting to have a welcome mat at our border and return back to the open border situation that we had under [former President Joe] Biden."

"I don't think that that is going to be a candidate that's going to really resonate with Texans," Van Duyne said.

Paxton's victory capped a bitter Republican battle that drew national attention and energized conservative voters across Texas. Van Duyne noted the large crowd at Paxton's election-night event, which included actress and comedian Roseanne Barr.

The congresswoman said Republicans can now unite behind Paxton and focus entirely on defeating Talarico in the November midterm election.

"Finally, we are able to go after the Democrat candidate instead of having this infighting between the two Republicans," she said. "Too much money was spent on that, and I'm glad we're able to finally focus on, truly, the candidate that we have to beat."

Host Bianca de la Garza noted that Talarico's campaign reportedly raised $600,000 within hours of Paxton securing the nomination and aired part of a new ad attacking Paxton over ethics allegations.

Van Duyne predicted Democrats will spend heavily in an attempt to flip Texas but said Republicans have defeated such efforts before.

"They're going to try. And, of course, he's going to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars," she said.

"I mean, they're going to spend millions, hundreds of millions of dollars trying to take over Texas. They've done this before," Van Duyne added.

"We've been there before, and Texans have always fought back."
