Letters: Csssidy a cautionary tale for Letlow, Fleming
Sen. Bill Cassidy was ousted by Republican challengers Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming. While Cassidy recognized the fairness of democracy, he made comments about online "attacks" on the internet, stating, "Insults only bother me if they come from somebody of character and integrity..."
Cassidy once showed integrity when he, along with six other Republicans, voted to convict President Donald Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He had the support of Democrats, independents and conservatives, who realized the faulty alignment of Trump with the Republican Party and American democracy.
Then, he did the worst thing he could have; Cassidy backed down. He backed down so much he was essentially publicly groveling for forgiveness — even going so far as to confirm Robert Jr., completely tanking his own medical, vaccine legacy as a physician.
Cassidy said those attacking him online have no integrity. When people are desperate, disenfranchised, sick and poor, online "attacks" are their viable recourse to express their anger and frustration. Integrity means not aligning oneself with a person (Trump) found liable for sexual assault in a court of law. Integrity means not shrinking before a threat to democracy, remaining silent or supportive, then announcing that democracy and "our country is not about one individual" when it's too late and there is nothing left to lose, all the while throwing your own citizens and constituents down as carpeting for a wannabe dictator to walk over.
Integrity. Interesting choice of words from the defeated man, who bent the knee and lost his own. If Letlow and Fleming have any integrity, they'll remember that. If Cassidy had any integrity, he would have known better.
