How tax cuts are helping workers save money
Since the Working Families Tax Cuts were enacted just over a year ago, I have heard from Michiganians across all walks of life about how this transformative law is helping them keep more of their hard-earned paycheck. One story that sticks out is the HVAC repairman, from Holland, who contacted my office.
He picks up every emergency call he can get and for the first time in years, that overtime pay is letting him make a real dent in saving for the down payment on his first home. He’s keeping more of his OT pay thanks to No Tax on Overtime provision, and he’s not alone.
Across Southwest Michigan, police officers are answering one more call at the end of a long shift, construction crews are working past sundown to finish a job, and truck drivers are pushing through one more delivery, because these extra hours are the difference between getting by and getting ahead.
In fact, nearly 30 million American workers have claimed this signature No Tax on Overtime benefit included in the Working Families Tax Cuts.
Another important measure I championed in the Working Families Tax Cuts makes buying a new American-made vehicle more affordable. More than 1.4 million filers utilized this provision allowing taxpayers to deduct interest paid on new auto loans for vehicles assembled in the United States. This feature also strengthens American manufacturing by encouraging the purchase of vehicles built here at home and supporting the Michigan workers who make them.
Combined with a resurgence in American manufacturing and trillions in new private investment flowing into the United States, this tax relief is helping working-class families recover from the devastating economic years of the Biden Administration.
In the first year, American families and workers claimed $82 billion in individual relief directly from the Working Families Tax Cuts. Ninety-seven percent of filers received a tax cut this past filing season who otherwise would have owed more. More than 7.5 million filers claimed No Tax on Tips, with an average deduction of more than $7,000, while more than 35 million seniors claimed the Enhanced Deduction for Seniors, with an average deduction of more than $7,500. Without this consequential legislation, Americans would have faced a $5 trillion tax increase.
Despite the indisputable economic relief provided to millions of Americans, with nearly 70% of filers receiving a tax cut earning less than $100,000, every Democrat in Congress voted against the largest tax cuts in history for hardworking Americans.
For generations, America was built by men and women willing to go the extra mile. These patriotic Americans never asked for special treatment, simply working hard every day to keep more of what they earn. The Republicans' Working Families Tax Cuts recognizes those efforts by rewarding work instead of taxing it.
With our nation just turning 250 years old, we should honor the enduring American belief that our government should serve our people by not standing in the way of their success.
Our founders fought for liberty and against burdensome taxation, establishing the principle that Americans should enjoy the fruits of their labor. President Donald Trump and House Republicans have fought to ensure that same spirit lives on as millions of workers benefit from lower taxes through the Working Families Tax Cuts, including No Tax on Overtime, allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks and build a stronger future for themselves and their children.
U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Holland, represents Michigan's 4th Congressional district.
