Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., told Newsmax on Tuesday that he's "very anxious" to see specifics of President Donald Trump's deal with Iran because the "devil's in the details."
Appearing on "Wake Up America," Gimenez said any agreement must permanently block Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, guarantee free commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and end Tehran's support for terrorist proxy groups throughout the Middle East.
"I could go with zero path to a nuclear weapon — that has got to be paramount," Gimenez said. "And then opening up the Strait of Hormuz for free commerce without any kind of tolling. That's got to be the minimum."
The Florida Republican emphasized that while he trusts Trump to negotiate a strong agreement, he remains deeply skeptical of Iran's willingness to honor any commitments.
"I don't trust the Iranians. I never will trust the Iranians," Gimenez said. "What kind of leverage do we have against the regime resuming their nefarious activities?"
Trump announced a preliminary agreement with Iran aimed at ending months of conflict and reopening the critical Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that carries roughly 20% of the world's oil supplies.
The administration has promoted the framework as a major diplomatic breakthrough that could lower energy prices and stabilize the region.
However, lawmakers in both parties have raised questions because the full text of the memorandum of understanding has not yet been released publicly.
Several Republican senators, including Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., John Kennedy, R-La., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, have called for Congress to review the final agreement, particularly any provisions involving Iran's nuclear program.
Gimenez echoed those concerns, arguing that enforcement and verification will determine whether the deal succeeds.
"The blockade, for me, is the big leverage that we have against Tehran," he said. "I want to see the details and the verification of Iran actually complying with the deal."
The congressman argued that preventing a nuclear-armed Iran is essential not only for Israel's security but also for America's.
"This is about American security," he said. "Iran can never again threaten our ally Israel and the rest of the Middle East. Frankly, they can't threaten us."
Gimenez noted that Iran's leaders have long embraced anti-American rhetoric, making verification provisions especially important.
"That is the fly in the ointment," he said. "That's where the rubber meets the road."
While expressing confidence in Trump's leadership, Gimenez said Congress must carefully examine any final agreement to ensure it delivers the goals that justified military action in the first place.
"I trust the president," he said. "But I want to see what's in the deal and how we're going to enforce it."
