White House nominates replacement for Nevada US Attorney Sigal Chattah
The Trump administration nominated George Kelesis to be the U.S. attorney for Nevada.
The Las Vegas lawyer would replace Sigal Chattah, who held the position temporarily.
The news came in a list of nominations sent to the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Kelesis's bio on the Cook & Kelesis law firm's website says he served on the Nevada Tax Commission for 20 years and focuses on tax law and estate planning. It adds that he has handled “a variety of white collar state and federal crimes throughout his career.”
For Chattah to officially secure the U.S. attorney’s job, that would've required Senate confirmation.
She never received this because Nevada’s senators — Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen — made clear they would not support her nomination.
Chattah initially served as interim U.S. attorney for Nevada. When the deadline for interim status was about to expire, Chattah resigned last July and was immediately named “acting” U.S. attorney for Nevada.
This maneuver allowed her to stay on an extra 210 days in the role without Senate confirmation.
At the time, Chattah told the Reno Gazette Journal, “It is an absolute dream job. There’s nothing more gratifying than knowing you have the ability to make your community safe.”
Kelesis will also need the support of Nevada’s senators.
Cortez Masto spokesperson Lauren Wodarski said, “U.S. Attorney for Nevada is a critical position, and Senator Cortez Masto plans to conduct a tough, thorough interview with Mr. Kelesis.”
Rosen had called on Chattah to resign in October. A spokesperson said, “Mr. Kelesis’s nomination was only sent to the Senate last night, so Senator Rosen is still reviewing the nominee.”
The U.S. attorney's office said Chattah had no comment.
Kelesis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
