Suspicious Letter Mailed to Pingree’s Portland Office Using DSA Return Address

Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) was the latest member of Congress to receive a suspicious letter addressed to her on Monday morning, as Congress members across the nation, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), have received similar mail.

“This morning, my Portland office received a suspicious letter consistent with those received by many other congressional and election offices in recent days. I am grateful to the Portland Police and Fire Departments and the FBI for responding quickly to the potential threat and helping keep my staff and others in the Marine Trade Center safe. U.S. Capitol Police has been notified,” said Rep. Pingree on X.

“We cannot accept threats and intimidation as a normal part of our politics. The people who work in congressional offices and administer our elections are public servants dedicated to helping their communities. They deserve to do that work without fear. Political disagreement is part of a healthy democracy. Threatening the people who keep it running is unacceptable,” she added.

Pingree included an image of the letter, showing that it has a return address for the DSA, Democratic Socialists of America, at 75 Maiden Lane, number 505, in New York City.

Images of letters sent to other congress members showed the same return address.

The inclusion of the DSA in the return address line does not, of course, confirm the involvement of the organization and could have been written on the letter to misdirect investigators.

Letters went out to numerous senators and representatives and targeted members of both parties.

Some of the letters, like those mailed to Sen. Collins, were intercepted by authorities before they arrived, while others made their way to their destinations.

According to the FBI, which provided a statement to The Maine Wire, the letters also went to election offices and secretaries of state, and some contained an as-of-yet unidentified substance.

The letters are currently under investigation.
