Chip Roy to Newsmax: GOP Winning Redistricting

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, told Newsmax that for years, Democrats had been using redistricting to “fraudulently win the game.” But he said now that’s changing.

Roy told Ed Henry on The Big Take on Monday that a series of political and judicial changes means that “People are moving to the Republican Party. They understand we're leading.”

Roy is running for the job of Texas state attorney general and said he believes the momentum going into the critical midterm elections is with the GOP.

“First of all, we're all running very hard on the president's record and what we've been able to do from the big beautiful bill and tax cuts, to securing the border of the United States, to restoring sanity, ending a lot of the woke garbage, restoring a sense of confidence, and pride in our United States military, reestablishing our footprint around the globe.”

Roy admitted there is one lingering issue, however. “We've got a lot more to do to make things affordable for middle-class families,” he said.

The Texas Republican added, “We're working on it hard, but the redistricting battle, that gives up the game. Democrats for years have been trying to basically fraudulently win the game by doing what you saw them do in New England, for example. There's not a single Republican seat in all of New England.”

That kind of politically motivated changing of congressional district boundaries has given Democrats an unfair advantage for too long, he said.

“California is almost all Democrat. So, Texas, which used to be roughly 25 to 13, we add five seats,” Roy said. “So now it'll be something like 30 to eight, and they're throwing a conniption fit.”

But Roy said the national picture still needs adjusting to be truly representative.

“Meanwhile, we don't have a single representative in New England. That was watering down our votes as members of Congress in Texas. So, we were doing the right thing to level the playing field.”

Roy said now Democrats are feeling the pinch and they don’t like it. “They’re freaking out,” he said, “because we're winning. The Virginia Supreme Court absolutely followed the law in Virginia, followed the Constitution. That was a no-brainer.”

Roy was referencing the decision by Virginia’s State Supreme Court which gave Democrats a bruising defeat when it invalidated a redistricting plan that party leaders believed could help flip control of the House in 2026.

The court struck down a constitutional amendment that would have temporarily allowed the Democratic-controlled General Assembly to redraw congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Reuters reported the proposed map was expected to heavily favor Democrats and potentially deliver the party up to four additional House seats in a narrowly divided chamber.

That ruling followed a recent Supreme Court decision that affected parts of the Voting Rights Act and opened the door for more aggressive map-drawing battles across multiple states.

Roy said it was the right decision. “[Justice] Clarence Thomas said it best. Section two of the Voting Rights Act is not supposed to have anything to do with redistricting. He's right. The court got it right. And now we're going to have a better representative map in the United States.”
