Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick endorses Mayes Middleton in Republican attorney g

AUSTIN — Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has endorsed state Sen. Mayes Middleton for attorney general, a high-profile boost before the GOP runoff May 26.

Patrick’s endorsement could add momentum for Middleton, who is facing U.S. Rep. Chip Roy of Austin for the Republican nomination.

“Mayes Middleton has established a record as one of the most conservative senators in Texas history,” Patrick said on social media. Mayes will make the post "the strongest and most impactful AG office in the nation," Patrick said.

Middleton of Galveston was the top vote-getter in the four-way Republican primary in March. He has outraised Roy and spent more on advertising, positioning himself as the candidate most closely aligned with President Donald Trump.

Roy’s campaign did not immediately respond Tuesday to a message seeking comment.
