With Tyler Gilbert away from the team due to a family medical emergency, Murphy will have another opportunity to show what he can do at the big league level. He holds a 10.50 ERA and 2.33 WHIP over six innings in six outings for the White Sox this season.

Murphy had been knocked around in six appearances for the Pale Hose — registering a 10.50 ERA and 2.33 WHIP over six innings — and it sounds like the elbow issue may be partly to blame. No word yet from Will Venable and company on how long he’ll be shelved for. Brandon Eisert was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move to take his place in the White Sox’ bullpen.

Seranthony Domínguez and Grant Taylor were unavailable after pitching the previous two days, so Murphy got the call in spite of having allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings to begin the year. He began the ninth by walking Kazuma Okamoto, but he then retired three in a row to protect a 3-0 lead. Murphy’s previous save was of the three-inning variety while with the Red Sox in 2023.

Murphy has worked exclusively in relief in the majors, but the 27-year-old could get stretched out either as a potential starting option or a multi-inning bullpen arm. While he’s been effective as a reliever, fantasy managers should look elsewhere even if he did somehow get a starting gig.

Murphy heads to Chicago after registering a serviceable 3.12 ERA across 34 2/3 innings over 23 appearances in low-leverage duty for the Red Sox this past season. Boston clearly feels that they had some superior options coming up through their system which is why they made the decision to move on from Murphy and a couple other relievers over the past few hours.
