Bentz introduces bill to strengthen local input in water management
Rep. Cliff Bentz, Oregon's lone Republican congressman, has introduced legislation to ensure meaningful local input in the operation of federal water projects.
H.R. 8259, the Federal Water Projects Consultation Improvement Act of 2026, focuses on strengthening stakeholder coordination under the Endangered Species Act, particularly during federal consultation processes that can significantly reduce water deliveries to agricultural producers, municipalities and rural communities.
"Water is the lifeblood of the West, and the people who rely on it deserve a voice in decisions that affect it," Bentz said, in a news release.
