Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., defended a proposed $300 billion private investment fund tied to the emerging U.S.-Iran framework agreement, saying the initiative would be financed by Gulf nations rather than American taxpayers and would depend on long-term stability in Iran.
Speaking Thursday on Newsmax TV's "American Agenda," Meuser said the investment proposal has been mischaracterized by critics and media reports as a government-funded program.
"It's an idea, a plan that once there's stability within Iran, the Gulf nations stepped forward and said Qatar and others and said, 'You know what? We'll invest in Iran. We'll help you rebuild it,'" Meuser said.
The congressman emphasized that any funding would come from private investors and governments in the Gulf region seeking returns on their investments, not from the United States.
"There will be private investments, not by the United States taxpayer," Meuser said.
"Again, as the media tries to portray what a $300 billion slush fund or whatever they want to call it, it would be investment that the Gulf nations took upon themselves to make the offer within the peace agreement."
The proposed fund is part of discussions surrounding a broader framework agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at reducing tensions and establishing conditions for future economic development.
Details of the agreement and any associated investment mechanisms have yet to be finalized.
Meuser said the success of any investment initiative would hinge on Iran maintaining stability and complying with international expectations.
According to Meuser, Gulf investors would be unlikely to commit substantial resources if they believed Iran remained vulnerable to future military conflict or continued actions viewed as destabilizing.
"They're not going to throw away their money if they think there's an instability and that Iran may be bombed again in the future for behaving beyond what a civilized nation, how a civilized nation should behave," he said.
Meuser rejected suggestions that the proposed fund would amount to a financial giveaway, describing it instead as a market-based investment strategy led by regional partners with their own economic interests at stake.
He said any investments would ultimately be driven by expectations of stability, growth and financial returns rather than political considerations alone.
