Published by Dundurn Press, the book focuses in part on former Expos standout Willie Davis, the team’s Player of the Year in 1974, tracing both his achievements and challenges throughout a lengthy Major League career. It also includes 35 additional chapters highlighting players who wore the Expos uniform between 1969 and 2004.
“That’s been my niche in my books, is to write vignettes about different players involved with the Expos,” Gallagher said.
Originally from Douglas, Gallagher has long been recognized for his work documenting the history of the franchise. He is also part of the group Players on Base, which is advocating for Major League Baseball’s return to Montreal following the Expos’ relocation to Washington after the 2004 season.
Gallagher said bringing MLB back to Montreal would require significant investment, estimating a cost of about $3 billion for either an expansion franchise or a relocated team, along with the construction of a new downtown stadium.
“We need a person with deep pockets because it will take a lot of money, not just for a new team, but also for a new stadium downtown,” he said.
He added he believes MLB expansion could happen as early as 2029, coinciding with the expected retirement of commissioner Rob Manfred.
