Sec. Duffy and Congressman Van Orden tout highway funding in Monroe County

SPARTA, Wis. (WEAU) - Just two weeks after Vice President JD Vance came to the Badger state, Western Wisconsin received another major visit. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy joined Congressman Derrick Van Orden in Monroe County on Friday.

“My experience in Sawyer County, small-town Hayward, Wisconsin, affects my view on transportation as a whole,” Sec. Duffy said. “It’s incredibly important, which is why it’s so meaningful for me to get it done. For me, it crafts my view of the world and how we should spend money through DOT.”

The two politicians emphasised that the U.S. government has not forgotten rural America. They highlighted securing $8.4 million for CTH ET. The funding will go towards improving the highway while making access to Fort McCoy and the Tomah VA safer.

“This is what government is supposed to look like,” Congressman Van Orden said. “How this works is we get demand signals from the community, and they tell us what you need. This road needed significant improvement.”

“You need more roads and bridges, not just in Monroe County but around this state, around the country,” Duffy said. “That’s what we need, and that’s what we’re focused on in Washington.”

Duffy and Van Orden said they will continue to try to help rural Wisconsin get the resources it needs.

“I’m not going to forget about rural Wisconsin, rural America. It’s not just going to Chicago. It’s not just going to Dallas or New York, that’s not where the money goes,” Sec. Duffy said. “Oftentimes in rural America, that’s the way we feel. We get shortchanged because no one thinks about us. In this administration, that is not true. We think about you. We care about you, and we are going to focus on making sure you get the resources that you need for the projects that are vital to your community.”

It’s also important to note this is the second high-profile political visit in the last two weeks, at a time Congressman Van Orden is seeking reelection. Secretary Duffy grew up in Hayward, Wisconsin and previously served as a Wisconsin Congressmand.
