Donald Beyer

Incumbent Virginia Rep. Don Beyer will get a chance to return to his seat for U.S. House District 8 after Tuesday's primary elections.

Beyer is the projected winner, according to the Associated Press, which called the race after he secured just over 11,700 votes with 31% of all votes counted as of 7:34 p.m.

Beyer, previously an ambassador under the Obama administration and lieutenant governor of Virginia, told 7News his experience and voting record are the biggest reasons why voters should send him back to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mo Seifeldein managed to secure the second-most ballots (3,752) at the time the race was called and is the only other candidate who has been elected to public office, having served on the Alexandria City Council. He was also a federal attorney in the U.S. Department of Labor before resigning in protest of President Donald Trump's policies.

Michael Duffin worked in the State Department, specializing in counterterrorism. However, he was fired as part of the federal job cuts at the beginning of Trump's second administration. He secured just over 660 votes at the time the race was called.

Adam Dunigan, who secured the third-most ballots (1,925) at the time the race was called, served in the Marines, which included a combat deployment to Afghanistan. He left the Marines in 2014 to become a case officer in the CIA.

Lorena Bruner is an educator who was vice president of public policy for the American Association of University Women.

Because Virginia Congressional District 8 is a safe Democratic stronghold, the primary election has historically served as the de facto general election.

Beyer will now face off against Republican Tony Sabio in the November General Election. Sabio was the only GOP candidate to qualify for the ballot.
