US envoy to Ukraine steps down amid 'differences' with Trump

The acting US Ambassador to Ukraine, Julie Davis, has announced that she will step down from her post in the coming weeks, just a year after she was appointed.

According to a report by the Financial Times, Davis decided to leave her post as the acting chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Kyiv after differences with US President Donald Trump.

Her departure follows that of her predecessor, Bridget Brink, who had resigned from the post last April over similar reasons.

Sources told the news outlet that Davis has indicated she would step back from her diplomatic career after nearly three decades of service.

Davis, who is still officially accredited as ambassador to Cyprus while also serving in Kyiv, was caught off guard in October when media reports revealed that Trump had nominated Arizona businessman and Republican donor John Breslow as the next ambassador to Cyprus.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott has rejected the report, saying it is “false” to suggest that Davis quit over differences with Trump.

“Ambassador Davis has been a steadfast proponent of the Trump administration’s efforts to bring about a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine,” he said in a statement.

He added, “She will continue to proudly advance President Trump’s policies until she officially departs Kyiv in June 2026 and retires from the Department.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine has stepped up attacks on civilian infrastructure ‌in Russia, President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday, citing a recent drone strike on an oil refinery in the southern city of Tuapse.

“Drone strikes against civilian infrastructure are becoming more frequent,” Putin said in comments broadcast on Russian television. “The latest example is the strikes against energy facilities ‌in Tuapse, which could potentially cause serious environmental consequences.”
