U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will travel to Des Moines for a campaign rally on May 10 to support Democratic Senate candidate Zach Wahls.

Warren, a former presidential candidate and national progressive leader, will hold additional events with Wahls on May 11, said Andy Suchorski, an adviser for Wahls.

In a statement shared with the Des Moines Register, Warren said, "Zach Wahls is running to shake things up. He's taking on a corrupt system that's rigged against working families."

"Zach has the guts to challenge that rigged system, root out the corruption driving costs through the roof and actually fight for the people of Iowa," Warren said. "That's the kind of senator we need, and I'm proud to be in Iowa to help him win."

The visit will be Warren's first trip to Iowa since her 2020 presidential campaign, where she came in third in the Iowa Caucuses.

The events with Warren are part of Wahls' "Iowans Over Insiders" tour, where he has rolled out policies on health care, the economy, rural Iowa and combatting corruption.

Wahls faces state Rep. Josh Turek, D-Council Bluffs, in the June 2 Democratic primary to choose the party's nominee for U.S. Senate.

Both candidates are seeking to be the first Democrat in Iowa to win a U.S. Senate race in Iowa since former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin won his last reelection campaign in 2008.

Both of Iowa's Senate seats have been in Republican hands since U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst won Harkin's seat in 2014. Ernst is not seeking reelection this year.

Warren endorsed Wahls for Senate in March. Wahls previously endorsed Warren in her 2020 presidential bid.

Wahls said he was honored to welcome Warren to Iowa.

"She has spent her career standing up to the corporate special interests that have rigged our economy, and that's exactly the fight Iowans want their next senator to take on," he said. "Every day, this campaign gets stronger because Iowans aren't looking for another politician who works for the lobbyists and the donor class. They're looking for a senator who works for us."

The winner of the Democratic primary will face the winner of a two-person Republican primary between U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson and former state Sen. Jim Carlin. Hinson is considered the heavy favorite, with a large fundraising lead and the endorsement of President Donald Trump.
