U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes, D-Akron, will bring an Akron union leader as her guest to the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night, highlighting the role of organized labor in Northeast Ohio’s economy.

Sykes, who represents Ohio’s 13th Congressional District, announced that Matt DiLauro, president of United Steelworkers Local 2L, will join her in Washington, D.C., for the annual address. The local union represents thousands of tire and rubber workers in Akron and advocates for fair wages, safe working conditions and benefits for its members.

Sykes said she chose DiLauro to underscore the importance of union workers and to promote her bipartisan proposal, the No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act, which would eliminate federal income taxes on overtime pay. The legislation is intended to expand overtime tax relief to workers not covered under H.R. 1, officials stated.

“Ohio’s workers are the backbone of our economy, and they deserve to keep every dollar they earn,” Sykes said in a statement. “I’m proud to have Matt DiLauro in Washington as we continue the fight for fair wages and commonsense policies like the No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act.”

President Trump will deliver his State of the Union address at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Media coverage of the event is expected to run from 9 to 11 p.m. ET.

The State of the Union will be broadcast on all major television networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox News, NPR and PBS. The White House will also livestream the event.
