Thomas Frank issues blunt eleven-word injury update on Lucas Bergvall at Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall was forced off with an injury in the second half of Crystal Palace vs. Tottenham at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday evening, ending 2025 on a happy note.

After weathering the early storm, Spurs thought they had taken the lead after just 17 minutes via Richarlison, but their goal was ruled out due to Lucas Bergvall being in an offside position in the build-up. That did not dampen their spirits, and against the stream of play, Tottenham took the lead just before halftime.

Archie Gray scored his first goal in senior football in the 42nd minute, heading in from close range after headers from Randal Kolo Muani and Richarlison kept the move alive from a Pedro Porro corner kick. Crystal Palace upped their ante in the second half and pushed hard for the equaliser. However, Spurs thought they had delivered the killer blow in the 75th minute.

Richarlison was unlucky again as his close-range goal was disallowed due to being offside after a VAR review. The Eagles threw the kitchen sink to get an equaliser and at least win a point, but the Lilywhites defended extremely well and took the points back to North London.

Thomas Frank provides injury update on Lucas Bergvall

Tottenham fans were delighted to see their team bounce back to winning ways after back-to-back losses to Nottingham Forest. The victory at Selhurst Park lifted them to 11th in the table, but crucially, Spurs are just four points off fifth-placed Chelsea.

On an evening that turned out to be great eventually, even though the performance once again was sub-par, there was an injury concern during the game. Lucas Bergvall started in the No.10 role in the absence of suspended Xavi Simons. The central midfielder tried his best to get involved in the game and made some crisp passes, but overall, he could not impact the game in the final third.

The teenager was forced off in the 63rd minute with an apparent groin injury. When asked about whether Lucas Bergvall will be fit for the game against Brentford on New Year’s Eve, Thomas Frank said, providing a rather blunt 11-word update (h/t The Standard):

“Yes, I hope so (that he is okay). Of course, we will assess him tomorrow.”

Frank’s words on Lucas Bergvall will relax the Tottenham fans, although his injury will be assessed today. Any player being forced generally does not bode well, but the fact that the young Swede walked off the pitch alongside a physio could be down to just a knock or cramps and not any serious injury.

Xavi Simons is set to miss two more league fixtures following his red card in the defeat to Liverpool, and if Bergvall’s injury proves serious, Frank will be forced to make alterations to his side against his former club, Brentford, later this week. Let’s hope Bergvall manages to shake off his problem and becomes available for Tottenham’s first game of 2026 at the Gtech Community Stadium.
