Rep. Gabe Amo leads moment of silence on House floor
U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, of Rhode Island's District 1, led a moment of silence on the U.S. House of Representatives floor Monday for the victims of the mass shooting at Brown University over the weekend.
Amo stood with U.S. Rep. Seth Magaziner, of District 2, and several other representatives in Washington, D.C., to memorialize the two killed and nine injured at the Ivy League campus on Saturday, Dec. 13.
"We rise to honor two students – Ella Cook and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov – whose lives were tragically ended in the horrific mass shooting at Brown University this weekend," Amo said at the podium. "Today, we hold in the light the victims, their families, and the Brown University and broader Rhode Island communities."
The Democratic congressman also took the time to praise the work of local officials, first responders, police officers, and medical professionals following the incident.
"I thank Mayor Brett Smiley, of Providence, Governor Dan McKee, and local leaders for their leadership and their ongoing response to the senseless tragedy," Amo said. "We're grateful to the first responders for their prompt action on the scene and medical professionals for caring for the wounded. As law enforcement continues their work, we thank them for their efforts and wish them strength in their pursuit to bring to justice whoever committed this horrific act."
As he stood on the House floor, Amo asked his colleagues to join him in a moment of silence. Many representatives bowed their heads and closed their eyes.
"For the extended Brown University, Providence, and Rhode Island communities, and everyone impacted around the country, we continue to stand together to heal and work towards the safety we all deserve," Amo said.
