Alabama congressman says some Congress members would have warned Iran about US military strikes

U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Hoover, said he thinks President Donald Trump’s administration was justified in not briefing Congress about striking Iran because some members cannot be trusted.

Palmer made the remarks during an interview on the “Dale Jackson Show,” after commenting on why Democrat and Republican elected officials were not backing military operations against Tehran.

“I think it’s legitimate to have a discussion about the limits of the War Powers Act or the extent of it,” Palmer said.

“The authorization for the use of military force is a legitimate discussion to have. But we’re at a point in Congress right now, and this is really frightening to me, should be frightening to all Americans, that we can’t go in and have a classified briefing without people—members of Congress going out and immediately talking to the media. There are people in Congress that, I think, if the entire Congress had been briefed, I think there are people in Congress that would have warned the Iranians.”

AL.com left a message asking what specific congress members Palmer was referring to.

His office has not responded as of this publication.

Late Saturday night, the U.S. and Israel launched a joint operation against Iran killing the country’s leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Palmer said that while he isn’t a proponent of war he believes Trump did the right thing by striking Iran and history will vindicate the president.

Iranian government officials have already begun a process for replacing Khamenei despite the Trump administration asserting that the supreme leader’s death would topple the regime.
