Who Was John Steele? Florida Judge Dies After Greg Steube's Impeachment Motion

Florida immigration judge John E. Steele has died suddenly, according to court officials, only hours after Republican Congressman Greg Steube introduced articles of impeachment against him over a controversial immigration ruling involving a convicted Cuban plane hijacker. The circumstances surrounding Steele's death have not been disclosed, and no official cause of death has been announced.
The death was confirmed by a law clerk for Chief Judge Marcia Morales Howard of the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida, where Steele served. The New York Post, citing court sources and a legal source in Miami, first reported the judge's sudden passing. Authorities have not indicated any suspicion of foul play.
Death Comes After Controversial Immigration Ruling
Steele found himself at the centre of a political storm after ordering the release of Miakel Guerra Morales, a convicted Cuban plane hijacker who had remained in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody while awaiting deportation.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Morales was among a group that assaulted a flight crew and hijacked a Cuban aircraft, forcing it to fly more than 100 miles before landing at Key West International Airport in Florida. He was subsequently arrested by US Marshals, convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison before entering immigration detention pending removal.
In his July 8 ruling, Judge Steele concluded that Morales could not continue to be held indefinitely because his deportation was not reasonably foreseeable. Citing Supreme Court precedent governing prolonged immigration detention, Steele wrote that detention exceeding six months without a realistic prospect of removal violated established legal standards.
"The government cannot lock individuals in a cell indefinitely as a workaround for a stalled deportation process," Steele stated in his ruling.
Greg Steube Seeks Impeachment
The decision prompted an immediate backlash from Florida Republican Greg Steube, who introduced an impeachment motion in the House of Representatives accusing Steele of committing "high crimes and misdemeanors." Steube argued that the judge had overstepped his authority by ordering the release of an individual convicted of hijacking an aircraft.
"This is exactly the kind of activist judicial overreach the American people are sick of," Steube said. "Judge Steele had every legal justification to keep a convicted plane hijacker off our streets, and he chose to let him go instead." The impeachment effort had only just begun when news of Steele's death emerged.
Steele, who was appointed to the federal bench by former President Bill Clinton, served for decades in Florida's federal judiciary. His final ruling has now become the focus of a broader political debate over immigration detention, judicial discretion and the limits of executive authority in deportation proceedings.
