Rep. Jeffries mocks Trump as attention-seeking at World Cup

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Thursday mocked President Trump as an attention-seeking “old man in the club” for trying to grab a share of the spotlight at the World Cup trophy presentation last weekend.

The House Democratic leader said Trump humiliated himself by failing to exit the stage with other dignitaries at MetLife Stadium as the winning Spain soccer team prepared to celebrate with the trophy.

“He’s always chasing attention,” Jeffries told reporters at a Capitol Hill press conference. “He disgraced himself after the World Cup final. He looked like the old man in a club that no one wanted around and he’s the only one that couldn’t figure it out.”

Jeffries said the trophy debacle illustrated that Trump is more interested in grabbing the spotlight than solving the nation’s problems.

Trump was serenaded by boo birds as he walked onto the field after Spain’s 2-0 victory over Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a close friend and ally of Trump, tried to steer Trump off the stage to let the Spanish players celebrate with the trophy. But Trump brushed him off and lingered at the edge of the celebration as the stars started to jump and cheer at their historic victory, the second time in the last five world cups that Spain has won.

Trump pulled a similar stunt at the final of the inaugural Club World Cup that English powerhouse Chelsea won last summer. He wouldn’t budge even after players could be spotted asking him when he was going to step aside.
