President Donald Trump is offering some nice words to a top Democrat who he recently dubbed a “very low IQ individual” and “dumb guy.”

In a new interview with Punchbowl News, Trump called House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries a “nice guy” and said he believed he “could do business” with him.

The president pointed to what he characterized as a “good meeting” with Jeffries that took place in the Oval Office in September of last year — the only official in-person interaction between the two.

“He’s harsh cause I’m harsh on him, you know,” Trump said in comments released Friday. “I’m sure he would’ve be so harsh. I’ve said bad things about him.”

Trump went on to say that Congress consists of a “very strange group of people,” but he would “probably” mesh with them well.

“I think I’d probably get along with him very well,” Trump added of Jeffries.

Jeffries is likely to become the next House speaker if Democrats win back the House during the midterm elections.

But Trump maintained during the interview that he believes Republicans will keep control of Congress in November, despite recent polls showing Democrats with an advantage and historical trends against the party in power.

Trump and Jeffries have exchanged a number of verbal blows over the years, most recently ranging from the president saying his “Dumocrats” nickname is inspired by him to demanding the Democratic leader be charged with “inciting violence.”

Meanwhile, the New York congressman has blasted Trump as having “Jeffries derangement syndrome,” a play on “Trump derangement syndrome” coined to describe critics of the president.

Jeffries has not responded to Trump’s latest comments as of early Friday afternoon.
