President Donald Trump says he'd "probably get along with" House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., if Democrats regained control of the House in the midterm elections.

In an interview with Punchbowl News airing Friday, Trump was asked whether or not he could conduct business with Jeffries.

I'd probably get along with him very well," Trump said, calling Jeffries a "nice guy."

Trump recalled his meeting with Jeffries at the White House last year. "I think he’s a nice guy. He was here. We had a good meeting," Trump said.

The president was also asked about Jeffries' criticisms of his administration and policy, with Trump saying Jeffries is likely harsh because "I'm harsh on him."

Both Jeffries and Trump have traded barbs in the past, with Trump recently calling Jeffries a "low IQ individual."

As for the Republican leadership already in charge on Capitol Hill, Trump praised House Speaker Mike Johnson in his Punchbowl News interview.

"He's great. We work together great," Trump told the outlet, noting he believes Johnson should remain the Republican leader even if Democrats take the House.

The president also added that he doesn't think there are any thoughts about challenging Johnson.

When it comes to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Trump said he "doesn't want to get into that," saying, "It's early."

Trump told the outlet he gets along with Thune, but expressed dissatisfaction with Thune's opposition to getting rid of the filibuster.
