Terri DeBoer wins GOP primary in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Retired television meteorologist Terri DeBoer defeated businessman Ryan Cushman in the Aug. 4 Republican primary for a West Michigan U.S. House seat encompassing parts of Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties.
DeBoer defeated Cushman 79% to 21%, according to a race call for the 3rd Congressional District from the Associated Press at 10:34 p.m.
DeBoer now advances to the November general election, where she will face U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, D-Grand Rapids, who is running for reelection. Scholten, a former immigration attorney, has held the congressional seat since 2023.
Scholten ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
The 3rd Congressional District encompasses the cities of Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Kentwood, Grand Haven and Muskegon. Once a conservative stronghold that elected Republicans such as Vern Ehlers, Justin Amash and Peter Meijer, the district has trended Democratic since it was redrawn to its current configuration in 2021.
DeBoer, of Byron Center, worked as a meteorologist for more than three decades before retiring from NBC-affiliate WOOD-TV in 2023. She briefly worked for Jacobs Financial Services, a Grandville-based financial planning firm, before returning to meteorology at FOX 17 in 2024.
She retired from FOX 17 this year before announcing her congressional run.
