Kent County gets $750,000 federal funds for linked security camera program

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A new program that allows the Kent County Sheriff’s Department to tap into various surveillance cameras in real time has received $750,000 in federal funds.

U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, along with Kent County leaders, announced the development Thursday, Feb. 19.

Information about the Kent Safety Network, which will be tied to the Kent County Real Time Intelligence Center, was first announced in September by Kent County Board Chair Ben Greene.

“This isn’t government putting cameras on every corner,” Greene said. “This is schools, businesses, civic partners and residents choosing to work alongside law enforcement.”

Greene said business and residents can voluntarily link surveillance cameras to the system and also disconnect when they choose.

Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir said the intelligence center will be more than just linking cameras, but allow local police agencies to connect through modern technology.

Muir said he believes that “the community will see the value of this program and choose to participate because it enhances safety for everyone.”

He said the network’s purpose is to address active incidents.

Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young said business and residents should be able to sign up soon.

Scholten said the importance of getting “real-time” information in the hands of police cannot be understated.

She said the federal funds will help buy hardware and software for a data platform, as well staff training costs.
