A Minneapolis man who wielded a syringe and sprayed vinegar at Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has pleaded guilty to assaulting a United States officer, according to NBC News.

At a Jan. 27 town hall meeting, Anthony Kazmierczak charged at Omar and sprayed apple cider vinegar at the lawmaker.

He was tackled before he could reach her. Omar was unharmed.

Kazmierczak, 55, faces up to eight years in prison, but his lawyer, John Fossum, told NBC News he expects to be sentenced to between four and 14 months in jail.

He has already been held for three months, which would count toward time served, Fossum added.

Asked whether his client feels any remorse about his actions, Fossum replied: "That is beyond the range where I would be able to comment on the case."

According to an agreement signed by Kazmierczak, Fossum, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Bejar obtained by NBC News, Kazmierczak "understands that as a result of this conviction, [he] could experience additional collateral consequences, such as the loss of the right to carry firearms, the right to vote and the right to hold public office."

Court records show Kazmierczak has a prior felony conviction for automobile theft.

Kazmierczak had previously threatened Omar and told a close associate years ago, "Somebody should kill that [expletive]," according to an affidavit supporting his arrest obtained by NBC News.

The attack occurred hours before U.S. Capitol Police released its 2025 annual threat assessment, which reported a 37% increase in threat cases involving members of Congress, their staff, and families, rising from 9,474 cases in 2024 to 14,938 in 2025.

Omar addressed the attack later the same day in a post on X.

"I'm ok. I'm a survivor so this small agitator isn't going to intimidate me from doing my work," Omar wrote.
