U.P. lawmakers won’t back Jack Bergman’s reelection after his controversial endorsement
Upper Peninsula state legislators have publicly dropped their support for U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman’s reelection campaign after the congressman’s controversial endorsement of Beau LaFave, a candidate for the 38th Senate District Republican primary race.
Lawmakers’ combined criticism toward Bergman was aired after he reportedly earlier promised not to get involved in picking a favorite for that race, according to WLUC.
State Sen. Ed McBroom - who currently holds the seat but is term-limited - along with state Reps. Karl Bohnak and Greg Markkanen, issued a joint statement criticizing Bergman for breaking his word and making an endorsement in that race.
“Jack promised me he would not be endorsing in this race,” McBroom said. “I wish I could say I’m surprised that he lied to me ... .” the TV station reported.
Bergman issued a statement on Tuesday on his campaign page on social media: “I won’t back down from putting principle over party pressure. True America First Republicans stand for integrity, accountability, and putting the people first. Today, I’m asking you to stand tall with me and join in supporting my friend Beau LaFave as our next State Senator for the 38th District.”
LaFave is challenging current state Rep. Dave Prestin for the Republican nomination to replace McBroom.
The Republican primary election is scheduled for Aug. 4.
