How to watch President Trump's State of the Union speech in Nevada

President Donald Trump is set to deliver the first State of the Union address of his second four-year presidential term this week.

Trump spoke to lawmakers last March, but the speech wasn’t technically a State of the Union. Presidents usually start with a joint address early in their first year, then move on to formal State of the Union speeches in subsequent years of the presidential tenure.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) issued the traditional invitation to Trump to deliver this year’s address in January.

In a letter to Trump that was later shared on social media, Johnson praised Trump’s leadership, saying the country “stands stronger, freer and more prosperous.”

When is the State of the Union address?

President Donald Trump is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address at 6 p.m. PST on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Rebuttals by two Democrats, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and California Sen. Alex Padilla, will follow Trump's address.

Who are Nevada's senators bringing as guests to the State of the Union?

Although several members of Congress have announced that they would boycott the State of the Union this year, Nevada's senators have indicated they would be in attendance.

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) said her guest would be Vania Carter-Strauss, a nurse practitioner and faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno Orvis School of Nursing — someone who Rosen said has been hurt by tariffs and also has "seen up close how Nevadans have been negatively affected by cuts to Medicaid, Congressional refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits, and complete inaction on lowering health care costs."

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada) has not named her guest, but told NOTUS.org that it would be someone "that has been impacted by the Trump administration’s disastrous economic policies, especially when it comes to travel and tourism.”

What should Nevadans listen for in the State of the Union?

Hot-button issues that may come up during President Trump's speech and during the Democratic rebuttal include several that may affect Nevadans:

Housing affordability: Reno-Sparks home prices are near all-time-highs, and Nevada has a severe shortage of extremely low-income housing. Trump is pushing for lower mortgage rates to improve affordability, but critics say that doesn't help address the underlying shortage of housing.

Unemployment: Unemployment edged downward to 4.3% in January, up from a 50-year low of 3.4% in April 2023 but relatively low for the post-WWII era. Nevada's unemployment rate is typically one of the highest in the U.S., most recently logged at 5.2% — above every state except New Jersey and California as well as the District of Columbia.

Tourism and foreign relations: Foreign tourism in the United States fell by 5.4% in 2025, with tourism from Canada falling by 22%. Trump's rhetoric about annexing Canada and making it the "51st state" has been blamed for the drop. Las Vegas specifically saw a fall of 7.5% in the overall number of tourists, both domestic and foreign.

What is the State of the Union?

According to Congress’ website, the State of the Union is when the president outlines how the country is doing and what Congress should focus on next.

The address is required by the U.S. Constitution, which directs the president to keep lawmakers informed about the state of the nation and propose legislative priorities.

Traditionally, the speech is delivered sometime between early January and early February.

How long is the State of the Union?

The address typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

Each of Trump's State of the Union addresses from his first term surpassed an hour, according to The American Presidency Project, at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The group has tracked the time of the State of the Union addresses since Lyndon B. Johnson's in 1964.

He averaged an hour and 20 minutes between the three speeches (in 2018, 2019 and 2020.)

When Trump addressed Congress last March, he spoke for nearly 100 minutes, though that was not a State of the Union address.

Which presidents gave the longest, shortest State of the Union speeches?

Former President Bill Clinton gave the longest State of the Union speech when his Jan. 27, 2000 edition clocked in at 1:28:49.

Former President Richard Nixon is responsible for the shortest recorded State of the Union speech with his Jan. 20, 1972 address, which lasted 28:55.
