House Democrat renews call for party to reject Senate hopeful Graham Platner

Representative Jake Auchincloss, a Massachusetts Democrat, is renewing his call for his party to reject Graham Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee in Maine’s U.S. Senate race.

The congressman said during a CNN interview on Monday that Platner’s now-covered tattoo is disqualifying. The candidate’s chest featured a skull and crossbones that resembled a Nazi symbol until last fall. Auchincloss, who is Jewish, has demanded Platner’s exit from the race for months.

“I’ve been clear about Graham Platner. I find that tattoo and his commentary about it to be personally disqualifying,” the congressman said Monday. “I hope Maine voters agree with me.”

Platner covered up the ink as an image of the SS-like symbol spread across the internet. The candidate, a Marine Corps veteran, said he received the original tattoo during a tour in Croatia.

“We got very inebriated, and we did what Marines on liberty do and we decided to go get a tattoo,” Platner explained in October. “And we went to a tattoo parlor in Split, Croatia, and we chose a terrifying-looking skull and crossbones off the wall because we were Marines and, you know, skulls and crossbones are a pretty standard military thing, and we got those tattoos, and then we all moved on with our lives.”
