Clyburn, Dem politicians speak during 34th annual ‘World Famous Fish Fry’
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Congressman James E. Clyburn (SC-06) hosted his 34th annual World Famous Fish Fry on Friday.
Clyburn began the fish fry more than three decades ago as a thank you to campaign workers and volunteers.
Longtime political columnist Roger Simon has described Clyburn’s fish fry as “one of those all-too-rare, feel-good evenings in politics.”
This year’s event featured Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17). The fish fry was held at the EdVenture Children’s Museum in Columbia.
“It’s an incredible honor to be here,” Khanna said.
“Democrats can win anywhere. We should be fighting everywhere, and I’m excited,” Beshear said.
The gathering came days after a redistricting proposal at the State House that could have altered Clyburn’s congressional district. That effort failed.
At the fish fry, Clyburn reaffirmed his commitment to the district he has represented for more than three decades.
“This congressional district has been reflective of South Carolina because we are 27 percent of the voting South Carolina, and Democrats are around 43, 42 percent of the vote in South Carolina,” Clyburn said.
With more than 100,000 South Carolinians already casting early ballots, Clyburn said he hopes events like this help maintain that momentum and encourage more people to participate in the election.
WIS reached out to the South Carolina GOP for comment and was waiting to hear back.,
