Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) made a huge blunder as he admitted “many” Republicans are not pleased that President Donald Trump’s war with Iran is still playing out ahead of midterm elections.

It seemed like the congressman almost went out of his way to whiff during a Tuesday interview on Fox News, where headliner Harris Faulkner teed up a question tailor-made to defend the deeply unpopular conflict, which has seen a dramatic drop in Republican support as it draws out past its sixth month.

Lobbed a softball about when doing “hard things” is the right decision, Comer stammered and said, “I don’t think there are many Republicans on the ballot this year that, uh, were happy that this is happening right before an election, but President Trump did the right thing.”

The Kentucky lawmaker then doubled back and added, “He didn’t, uh, take political calculation into his decision-making. He did what was best to keep America safe, and it’s tough.”

Comer then began spinning out, claiming Iran was an “evil empire” that had taken on extra “territories” in the past decade.

The borders of modern-day Iran haven’t shifted in the past 10 years, nor have they changed much since the Islamic Republic was founded almost five decades ago, though the same can’t be said about its regional influence or military footprint.

Nevertheless, Comer said, “Something had to be done” about the Middle Eastern nation and everyone was all feeling “some type of pain” from the conflict, which has put a stranglehold on the global oil market and pumped up prices across the American economy and beyond.

Perhaps trying to end on a high note, the congressman said, “Hopefully in the end history will reflect kindly on President Trump’s bold leadership here.”

From there, Fox’s Faulkner made a hard pivot to Immigration and Customs Enforcement — another surefire winner with the American public.
