Holding the press conference at DeGarmo Park in Chico, Gallagher is calling it the "Representation Act." The act would look to establish a nationwide process that would require states to both identify and protect communities of interest before drawing Congressional maps. The bill would prohibit states from splitting documented communities across multiple Congressional districts unless they were required to by law. "Every place has representation, and when we draw those lines we should be making sure that every place has representation," said Gallagher. "Not that every party has representation, and unfortunately in these redistricting wars it's been all about that; in fact, Gavin Newsom made no bones about that when he proposed Prop 50 and put that out there." When speaking with Northstate's news after the press conference, Gallagher responded to claims that President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott started the redistricting currently happening in the United States. "I think it's wrong in Texas and I think it's wrong in California," said Gallagher. "It's not good for anybody, right? And at the end of the day the people lose, and parties do it to win, but people are the ones losing." Gallagher was joined by other local speakers, including Paradise Mayor Steve Crowder and others, to discuss how redistricting decisions could affect rural communities across Northern California. -- Report a correction or typo.
