Jasmine Crockett's history lesson; Mamdani's war on words and more

Diary of disturbing disinformation and dangerous delusions

This fantasy:

“There’s also a racist history that exists as it relates to Argentina.” — Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), Tuesday

We say: Crockett’s mic-drop moment came after she first declared that “the vast majority of the world” was rooting for Spain against Argentina in the World Cup final, then revealed the (imaginary) reason why — utter nonsense, since Argentina only began ending slavery after it won independence from . . . Spain.

This puzzlement:

“I think sometimes there’s a fixation on a definition of something.”— Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sunday

We say: Why are people so fussy about the meaning of words these days?

Maybe because the mayor keeps using terms like “socialism,” “genocide,” “working class” and “the rich,” and it’d helpful if he could explain what he’s talking about.

This calumny:

“Tomorrow, the House will vote on the NDAA, which includes a provision to merge parts of our military with the IDF.” — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Tuesday

We say: The defense-bill provision AOC mentioned simply sets up a US-Israeli tech collaboration that is less entangled than similar programs we have with Japan, Australia, India and Canada.

But as long as an antisemitic talking point has legs, let it run, eh?

This conspiracy:

“There are also a lot of immigrants who are getting killed and we don’t even know about it.” — Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.)

We say: Moulton says ICE is murdering lots of people all over the country and Team Trump is covering it up. How does he know? He heard “very specific detailed stories on the ground in Minneapolis.”

Huh? A congressman has the resources to check out third-hand rumors before he repeats tall tales on television.
