Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., told Newsmax on Monday he has visited Delaney Hall, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Newark, New Jersey, and said detainees are being treated very humanely.

Van Drew was at the facility following days of violent protests outside the center that forced New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who has publicly criticized ICE, to send in state police to restore order, including instituting a curfew.

"It's just such a shame to see. I want to thank our good members of the New Jersey State Police, the Newark police, the folks in ICE and Homeland Security for doing their job," Van Drew said on "Rob Schmitt Tonight."

"They're doing the right thing. They are showing extreme caution and being very careful," he said.

"We need to appreciate them because this is out of hand. I believe in First Amendment rights, but this is violent protests. People are going to get hurt."

Van Drew said none of the protesters are from New Jersey.

"It's antifa. It's [billionaire financier] George Soros," he said. "These are people they gathered from all over the country."

Van Drew noted that 60 people were arrested Sunday.

"Peacefully protest, protest away. Not peaceful, you should be arrested, period," he said.

Van Drew accused Democrats of not telling the truth about actual conditions at Delaney Hall.

"The facility is clean. It has medical care and dental care," he said.

"It has meals for those with allergies. It has treated those people, many of them, better than they were ever treated in their life," Van Drew continued.

"They have recreation areas, indoor and outdoor. It's unbelievable," he said.

"They are being treated very, very, very humanely. Cut it out. Stop the bad political theater."

Van Drew noted anybody who doesn't like the conditions at Delaney Hall is welcome to self-deport.

"If it was so bad, these people would be wanting to leave," he said.

"They don't want to go anywhere. Many of them have never had it so good in their life."
