Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Newsmax on Friday that Senate Republicans should find a way to send the SAVE America Act to President Donald Trump's desk, calling the election integrity measure "good common sense" after it already cleared the House.

Appearing on "National Report," Jordan said Republicans should use every available legislative avenue to overcome Senate procedural hurdles and advance the bill.

"We definitely want to get the SAVE America Act passed," he said. "This is just, as we've said I don't know how many times, it's just good common sense."

The House has already approved the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and strengthen voter identification requirements.

The measure now awaits action in the Senate, where Republicans face the chamber's 60-vote threshold.

Jordan said he believes the legislation enjoys overwhelming support among Americans.

"Show a photo ID when you vote; make sure you're an actual citizen voting? That is a 90-some-odd-percent issue, I would bet, across the country," he said.

"So why the Democrats oppose that, I'll never know, but they do," added Jordan. "My guess is it's for political reasons."

With the bill stalled in the Senate, Jordan said Republicans should consider using the budget reconciliation process, which allows certain legislation to pass with a simple majority, to advance portions of the measure if possible.

"We may have to put part of it on reconciliation. It's something the speaker has talked about. I'm for whatever avenue makes it happen," he said.

"Let's just make it happen because it's good common sense," Jordan emphasized.

Jordan argued the fight over the SAVE America Act underscores what he sees as the sharp policy divide between Republicans and Democrats heading into this year's midterm elections.

"I think the real takeaway here is … that's what the midterm election is about," he said. "We're the party of common sense. The left is now the party of crazy."

Jordan added that Republicans should remind voters of Democrats' positions on issues including voter ID, immigration enforcement, transgender athletes in women's sports, and government funding.

"I think this election is really about — you could summarize it in two sentences: They're crazy. We're not," said Jordan.

While some House Republicans have suggested slowing House business until the Senate acts on the bill, Jordan said he would rather keep working while maintaining pressure to move the legislation.

"I don't necessarily think you need that tactic," he said. "I just think we need to focus on trying to get the SAVE [America] Act done."

Jordan reiterated that if Senate rules continue to block the measure, Republicans should explore reconciliation because "there are elements that, under the rules, could be put on reconciliation, and we can get parts … done."
