California Rep. Jimmy Gomez Under Ethics Probe Over Sexual Misconduct: 5 Things To Know

Rep. Jimmy Gomez

Congressman Jimmy Gomez of California is facing an ethics probe by the House Ethics Committee over allegations of sexual misconduct, according to a new report by CNN. The probe is in its early stages, and Gomez has pledged to cooperate with any inquiry.

1. What Are The Allegations?

According to sources, the House Ethics Committee initially began looking into a New York Post report that alleged Gomez was seen kissing an aide who worked for another member of Congress outside a backyard party in 2023. A spokesperson for Gomez denied the report at the time, calling the claims “not true” and saying the alleged incident “didn’t happen.”

While following up on that report, the committee reportedly learned of additional allegations of sexual misconduct that are now part of its investigation.

2. Jimmy Gomez Responds to the Investigation

Gomez said he would fully cooperate with any inquiry by the House Ethics Committee.

“I will cooperate with any Ethics Committee inquiry and provide it with whatever information it might need,” he said in a statement provided to CNN.

The congressman also acknowledged making personal mistakes that caused pain to his family.

3. Gomez Admits Personal Mistakes, Denies Ethics Violations

In a lengthy statement, Gomez said that years ago he made mistakes outside his marriage but insisted that his actions were consensual and did not violate the law or House ethics rules.

“Years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage that have caused real pain to my wife and family,” Gomez said. “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.”

He also apologized to his wife, family, friends, and constituents, saying he had sought professional assistance to help repair personal relationships and move forward.

4. Ethics Concerns Continue to Grow in the House

The Gomez investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of allegations of sexual misconduct on Capitol Hill. According to CNN, the House Ethics Committee has been working to respond more aggressively to such complaints.

Two lawmakers, Reps. Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales, recently resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving staffers. Meanwhile, CNN previously reported that GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards is also under investigation over allegations of sexual harassment, which he has denied.

5. Congressional Leaders Are Pushing for Reforms

The case unfolds as congressional leaders seek broader reforms to how sexual harassment and misconduct allegations are handled in Congress.

House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest has called for additional staff and authority for the panel. Separately, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently appointed a bipartisan task force to examine and reform the process for handling sexual harassment claims. The effort is being led by Reps. Kat Cammack and Teresa Leger Fernandez.

Despite those efforts, lawmakers acknowledge that meaningful reforms could take time as Congress continues to grapple with public concerns about accountability and misconduct.
