Staten Island PSAL softball: Susan Wagner, Curtis, Tottenville cruise into 3A quarterfinals
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Senior Madison Borrero starred in both the pitcher’s circle and at the plate as Susan Wagner registered a 9-5 PSAL 3A second-round playoff victory over visiting John Jay Wednesday in Sea View.
The No. 3-seeded Falcons, who also received a four-double, four-RBI performance from sophomore Elissa Saez, will meet No. 6 LaGuardia (defeated DeWitt Clinton 11-1) in a quarterfinal encounter at an undetermined site on Monday.
Borrero, meanwhile, surrendered just one earned run, scattered six hits and walked one to earn the complete-game victory. The right-hander struck out 10.
She also finished with a pair of hits, a walk and three runs scored.
Leah Rieger, Jaylee Munday and Abigail Ayala also plated runs for SW.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Abigail Hynes fired a no-hitter and Nina Benedetto led a balanced attack with a pair of extra-base hits as the No. 5 Warriors cruised to the PSAL 3A victory over the visiting Knights in St. George on Thursday.
Curtis, which also received two hits apiece from Isabella Irizarry and Adelyn Thaisz, advanced to Monday’s quarterfinals and will meet No. 4 Stuyvesant at a yet to be determined site.
Hynes earned the four-inning victory after surrendering just four walks and striking out seven.
After Hynes’ run-scoring single highlighted a three-run first for Curtis, the Warriors exploded for 11 more in the next two frames thanks in part to Irizarry (two-run ground out), Rosanna Thomson (two RBI walks), Thaisz (two RBI singles), Benedetto (two-run triple).

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The defending PSAL 3A city champion Pirates exploded for seven first-inning runs and never looked back as they routed visiting Magic in Huguenot on Thursday.
Tottenville will now play No. 9 Fort Hamilton in the quarterfinals at a yet to be determined site on Monday.
