As a former high school civics and government teacher, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, and someone who has been actively involved in the political process at the local, state, and national levels, I am appalled at the direction our nation is heading.

There are always changes that come with a new administration. But what we are seeing now goes far beyond that. The Trump administration has shown a willingness to tear down the very framework of our federal government, with a systematic disregard for checks and balances, separation of powers, the art of compromise, and the Constitution itself.

We are in a period where, if you don’t agree with the President of the United States, you risk being publicly ridiculed, potentially fired, or even put in legal jeopardy. If you are a Blue State, you may expect federal troops or I.C.E Agents wreaking havoc in the name of “saving our cities.” It feels as if they are stripping the word UNITED away from our STATES.

Appointments and positions from the cabinet on down have not been filled with the most qualified individuals but with “yes” people willing to fall in line, regardless of whether it’s legal. There is total disregard for the truth and the dignity of The office of the President of the United States.

A constant barrage of lawsuits, unstable, unserious, and unpredictable domestic and foreign policy and an autocratic approach to governing are trademarks of the Trump Administration.

At a moment like this, silence is not an option. The American people cannot afford to look the other way. We must step up to the plate and restore integrity and accountability to our government. We can turn things around in 2026.

That work starts here at home.
