Donald Trump Faces New Impeachment Articles After Odds Hit All-Time High
President Donald Trump has been hit with new articles of impeachment over the U.S. war in Iran after odds that he will be removed from office reached an all-time-high.
On Tuesday, Connecticut Democrat John Larson announced he filed impeachment articles against Trump, amid the continued conflict.
His intervention came after the likelihood of impeachment and removal climbed to 27 percent on betting platform Kalshi on Tuesday, its highest point since Trump returned to office in January 2025.
Newsweek reached out to the White House by email to comment on this story outside of normal business hours.
The Context
The U.S. and Israel have been attacking Iran for nearly six weeks in a conflict that began when the U.S. carried out strikes in February in an operation dubbed "Operation Epic Fury." The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has said more than 3,500 people have been killed in Iran since the attacks began, including at least 1,665 civilians.
On Tuesday, Trump wrote on social media that a "whole civilization will die tonight" if Iran didn't reopen the Strait of Hormuz before 8 p.m. ET. With 90 minutes to spare, following discussions with Pakistan, a two-week ceasefire deal was agreed subject to Tehran lifting an effective blockade on the vital shipping channel for oil and other imports and exports.
What To Know
The previous high point on Kalshi prior to Trump’s Iran threats was April 2, 2025, when Trump rolled out major tariffs targeting U.S. imports.
Polymarket also offers a prediction market about whether Trump will be "impeached before his term ends." On Tuesday, that showed a 65 percent chance of impeachment at any point before he leaves office. It does not ask about the chances of the Senate removing Trump from office.
Trump was impeached twice during his first stint in the White House, but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate in both cases. Meanwhile, previous efforts to impeach Trump during his second presidency have thus far been unsuccessful.
What People Are Saying
Larson said in a statement: "Donald Trump has blown past every requirement to be removed from office. And it's getting worse. His illegal war in Iran is not only driving up prices for American families—it has cost American lives. He's becoming more unstable by the day. His profane and sacrilegious Easter Sunday and subsequent threats, including ‘a whole civilization will die’ and ‘open the Strait…or you’ll be living in hell’ not only foreshadow war crimes, but put our security at risk."
What Happens Next
Given that Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives, it is unlikely that this impeachment effort will be successful, but efforts to remove Trump may damage his reputation and standing with his Republican colleagues.
