Republican primary results show that President Donald Trump clearly remains the party's leader, Rep. John McGuire, R-Va., told Newsmax on Wednesday.
Appearing on Newsmax's "Wake Up America Early," McGuire said the latest GOP victories underscore the power of Trump's endorsement and growing voter support for Republican priorities ahead of the November midterms.
"President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party right now," McGuire said. "You can see that the power of a Trump endorsement is very powerful."
McGuire, who noted he was the first Republican candidate endorsed by Trump during the current election cycle, praised the president's record and leadership.
"This guy took a bullet for us, and he gets things done," McGuire said. "We've codified over 100 Trump executive orders."
The Virginia congressman also highlighted Trump-era tax cuts, calling them "the largest tax cut on the middle class in history."
McGuire blasted Democrats for opposing the SAVE America Act, legislation backed by Republicans that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and other Democrats have compared the measure to Jim Crow-era laws, a characterization McGuire rejected.
"They can't win the argument," McGuire said. "Eighty percent of Americans — Democrat, Republican, independent — believe that you should have voter ID. And they believe that only American citizens should vote in American elections."
Republicans have argued the SAVE America Act is necessary to protect election integrity, while Democrats contend it could make voting harder for eligible Americans who lack certain documents.
McGuire accused Democrats of pushing "radical leftist" policies that voters increasingly oppose.
"They are so afraid that their anti-American policies are not working that they are willing to do anything they can to try to keep power," he said.
Looking ahead to the midterms, McGuire predicted voters would choose "common sense versus chaos."
He pointed to issues such as border security, crime, and taxes as major contrasts between the two parties.
"Americans overwhelmingly want a secure border," McGuire said. "Republicans believe in keeping our people safe."
McGuire also criticized Democrats in Virginia over tax proposals following Democrat Abigail Spanberger's gubernatorial victory.
"They ran on affordability, but then they proposed over 50 new taxes," he said. "They voted themselves a 300% pay raise."
The congressman expressed confidence Republicans will continue building momentum as the election season intensifies.
