Jon Husted calls on Max Miller to resign amid domestic abuse scandal
U.S. Sen. Jon Husted said U.S. Rep. Max Miller should resign from Congress and abandon his reelection bid as Miller faces allegations of domestic abuse.
The Ohio senator joined a growing chorus of federal officials who believe Miller should no longer hold public office. Miller's ex-wife, Emily Moreno − the daughter of U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio − has accused the northeast Ohio congressman of assaulting her and their 2-year-old daughter.
Miller denies the allegations and said he won't drop out of his race against Democrat Brian Poindexter in Ohio's 7th Congressional District. A Miller spokesperson referred to the congressman's previous statement, indicating he would not step down.
"Given everything they are facing, I do not see how a campaign for Congress benefits any of them," Husted posted on X. "I believe Max would be making the right decision to step aside as a candidate and resign from Congress to focus on what is in the best interest of his daughter. Years from now, I believe he will look back and know it was the right choice for her."
Husted's comments came days after Bernie Moreno denounced his former son-in-law and called him unfit to serve in Congress. Husted previously demurred on whether Miller should drop out, saying the families needed to work through the issue and the "political ramifications ... will work themselves out."
President Donald Trump has yet to call for Miller's resignation but expressed doubts about his reelection prospects. The deadline to set candidates for the November ballot is Aug. 10.
Meanwhile, the House Ethics Committee is investigating the allegations against Miller, who said he would file paperwork himself to kickstart an ethics probe.
"Anyone who commits domestic violence is not fit to serve in Congress," Husted said. "The House Ethics Committee should thoroughly investigate any credible allegations, and any member found to have committed domestic violence should resign from Congress immediately."
