Synopsis

Ohio's Democratic primary on May 5, 2026, has set the stage for a high profile US Senate race. Former Senator Sherrod Brown secured an easy victory and will challenge Republican Senator Jon Husted. Brown, known for his economic populist message, aims to reclaim his seat, emphasizing his commitment to standing up for Ohioans against corporate interests.

The primary election in Ohio on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) set up what is expected to be one of the most expensive races for US Senate this year as Republicans try to hold on to the chamber. In what promises to be one of November’s most high-profile races, former Senator Sherrod Brown easily defeated a challenger in the Ohio Democratic primary and will now attempt to unseat Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

Brown represented Ohio as a member of the U.S. Senate (2007–25). He announced in August 2025 that he would run in 2026 to unseat Sen. Jon Husted, who was appointed by Ohio Gov. Mike Dewine to replace Vice President J.D. Vance. Brown touts his economic populist message in victory speech. The three-term U.S. senator from Ohio who lost his seat in the 2024 election thanked supporters at an election night party before pivoting to his longtime economic message.

“No one in the Senate is standing up to these corporations who raise your prices and who game the system,” Brown said to boos from the crowd, as reported by news agency AP.

Born November 9, 1952, in Mansfield, Brown was raised in the same city and has long been known as a persistent advocate for the people of Ohio. White growing up in Mansfield, he was active in the Boy Scouts, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout.
